So far this year, marijuana legalization advocates have had mixed success in state capitols across the country. They scored legislative victories in Rhode Island, Mississippi and Maryland, setting the stage for hundreds of millions of dollars in combined sales for recreational and medical marijuana companies in those states. Meanwhile, industry advocates suffered defeats in several states, including Kansas, North Carolina and South Carolina. These losses highlight the hurdles cannabis industry advocates face in Republican-controlled states. Rhode Island became the 19th state to legalize recreational marijuana. The marketplace is expected to launch Dec. 1, with existing medical marijuana operators getting the first crack at sales. Mississippi became the 39th state to legalize medical marijuana, with sales expected to begin late this year or early in 2023. Maryland lawmakers put the recreational marijuana issue before voters and are expected to approve a legalization initiative in November.
