Louisiana lawmakers passed a bill allowing the number of medical marijuana pharmacies to be expanded from 9 to 30. According to the No. 697 bill of the house of Representatives, the existing medical marijuana operators in the state can open another pharmacy in the same geographical area after serving 3500 active patients. Only when the existing pharmacy refuses to open a second location can the new medical marijuana operators apply to enter the market. The legislation also transferred industry regulation from the State Department of agriculture and forestry to the Louisiana Department of health. Cannabis cultivation will continue to be controlled by Louisiana State University and Southern University, both of which have contracts with private companies. In 2022, mjbiz Factbook predicted that the sales of medical marijuana in Louisiana would double this year, reaching $90million to $100million.
