Four years after Michigan approved recreational marijuana sales, the first black marijuana retailer with a Social Equity retail license opened in Detroit on Saturday. Low-income Detroit residents, people with previous marijuana-related convictions or those whose parents had MJ convictions prior to 2018 are also eligible for the license. Of the approximately 10,000 medical marijuana dispensaries and adult stores nationwide, fewer than 20 are black-owned, according to research by MJBizDaily. Adult-use sales began in Michigan in December 2019, but Detroit launched recreational marijuana sales only two months ago.
