Washington DC lawmakers approve medical marijuana bill and lift license cap

Washington, D.C. lawmakers have proposed an amendment to fundamentally reshape the region’s medical marijuana program — including removing caps on cannabis business licenses, providing tax breaks for operators, furthering social equity and creating new regulated business categories , such as on-site consumption facilities and cannabis cooking classes. The legislation, which would also allow adults to self-certify as medical marijuana patients, was approved by parliament's business and economic development committee on Tuesday. The medical marijuana amendments will now go to committee of the whole, before likely final approval by the D.C. council. The name of the legislative body was also changed, changing the name of the primary regulatory agency from the Alcoholic Beverage Regulatory Authority (ABRA) to the Alcoholic Beverages and Cannabis Authority.
